Our Staff

Your hosts and guides to the cultural and natural wonders
of the Peruvian Amazon

You will thoroughly enjoy the combined talents and knowledge of your hosts Howard Lawler and Reyna Villacorta and their friendly and competent local staff.  They will assure your fulfillment and satisfaction while exploring the rich diversity and mystery of the beautiful Peruvian Amazon.

Howard Lawler is an internationally-recognized biologist, conservationist and environmental educator. He is a seasoned professional zoologist and ethnobiologist with over 27 years experience in the development of conservation, education and research programs for natural history museums and zoological parks.

He has conducted educational ecotourism and scientific field studies throughout the southern United States, Haiti, Mexico, Honduras and the Peruvian Amazon. He has published over fifty articles and papers on wildlife, natural history and environmental education topics.

Howard is a naturalized citizen of Perú.  He is an accomplished and enthusiastic interpreter of natural and cultural history who will facilitate your interests in zoology, ecology, and indigenous culture with knowledge and competence.

Reyna Villacorta Vasquez is in charge of guest services at Amazon Rainforest Retreat.  She was born in the small jungle village of Bretania at the edge of the great Pacara Samiria Reserve, Peru's largest remaining rainforest wilderness.  She is intimately familiar with the traditional lifestyle of the Peruvian Amazon and the vast diversity of flora and fauna inhabiting the region.  She and her sisters will cater to your comfort and nutritional needs while at Amazon Rainforest Retreat.   She and Howard are married and have a son and daughter, little Howard and Selva Reina.
Howard has worked with Native American organizations and communities since 1970 in support of cultural preservation, health and wellness issues, economic growth, and socio-political self-determination.  In the Peruvian Amazon, he is working with the Bora and Yahua communities along the Río Momón, and the Huitoto community of the Centro Arenal in the Iquitos region.  He is a sensitive and trusted liaison with the indigenous peoples who cares deeply about their socioeconomic welfare and cultural survival. He will open many new doors of friendship and shared multi-cultural experiences.

Howard is President and founder of El Tigre Journeys, an ecologically and culturally focused educational travel organization. He also serves as volunteer Director of South American Programs for the International BioPark Foundation, a non-profit natural history and cultural organization based in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A.

As our guest at Amazon Rainforest Retreat, you will experience a unique and personal view of Amazonian life and lifestyle outside the standard tourist framework. You will feel like a member of our rainforest family. We look forward to your visit!
