More species of fishes occur in the Amazon River drainage than in the entire Atlantic Ocean! 

Species range from catfishes, tetras, cichlids, characins and other familiar tropical aquarium fishes to the gigantic paiche (Arapaima), the largest freshwater fish in the world.


The tucunaré is commonly called the "peacock bass".  It is actually a cichlid.
