North American Deserts

The Trail of the Jaguar reaches its northern limits in the warmer desert regions of North America.

Five great deserts occur in the western United States and Mexico. Of these, the Great Basin and Mohave are located entirely within the U.S. and the Tehuacan is entirely Mexican.

The ecologically diverse Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts are shared by both.

We'll start with the Sonoran Desert because of its strong biological relationship with the New World tropics.

Recent sightings of the jaguar in southern Arizona have stimulated the imagination of many who admire this magnificent predator for its own sake and for the essence of wilderness it embodies.

As you hike the Trail of the Jaguar, watch and listen for facts and stories about the natural history, ecology, folklore, and conservation of this icon for wildness here and throughout its range.
