Black-tailed Rattlesnake
Another foothill species also found at higher elevations up to 9,000 feet is the black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus).

This mild mannered snake is not inclined to strike in defense unless severely pressed.

Throughout much of its range, the color varies from brownish to dull yellow, always with a distinctly black tail tapering to dark chevron-like markings on the back.

Populations in the mountains of southern Arizona and adjacent to Arizona, however, are usually bright lemon yellow with sharp black contrasts.
